James Norwood, PsyD
Psychologist
San Francisco CA
I work with patients in-person at my office in the Cow Hollow district of San Francisco, CA on a once or more per week basis.
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist with a doctorate from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) and post-doctoral training from the New School for Existential Psychoanalysis. My practice centers on integrating existential therapy with psychedelic integration, helping individuals process and deepen their understanding of transformative experiences.
My doctoral research focused on MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, specifically on how clients integrate these powerful sessions into long-term healing. I’ve seen firsthand how psychedelic experiences can offer profound insight—but also how ongoing support and reflection are essential to sustain growth. Whether you’re exploring psychedelic integration for the first time or continuing after a guided session, I offer an experienced and grounded therapeutic space to help you navigate meaning, insight, and change.
In addition to psychedelic integration, I’ve received extensive training in existential psychoanalysis. My early education began at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, where I worked with spiritually oriented methods including meditation, religious inquiry, aikido, and expressive arts therapy.
I’m the co-founder of the Free Association Clinic for Existential Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, a San Francisco-based center offering affordable therapy and advanced training for early-career clinicians. I also serve as associate director and core faculty at The New School for Existential Psychoanalysis, where I lead seminars, supervise clinicians, and support a vibrant psychoanalytic learning community.
My goal is to support clients in exploring the full depth of their inner lives, with a compassionate and thoughtful approach rooted in philosophy, depth psychology, and integrative practice.
